Byron Hinterland Adventures: Exploring Nightcap National Park from Tallaringa
Escape to the lush, World Heritage-listed rainforest of Nightcap National Park – a breathtaking hinterland retreat perfect for couples.
When you’re staying at Tallaringa Romantic Cottages, you’re not just surrounded by peace and panoramic views — you’re perfectly positioned to explore some of the Northern Rivers’ most magical natural places. One of our favourite day trips for couples is a visit to Nightcap National Park, located in the Byron Bay hinterland.
This World Heritage-listed rainforest is a true gem — full of cascading waterfalls, ancient trees, wildlife, and quiet trails that invite you to slow down, reconnect, and share in the beauty of nature together.
Why Visit Nightcap National Park?
Nightcap National Park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed area that protects one of the most ancient and biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. These subtropical rainforests are living museums — home to species that have remained unchanged for millions of years.
The park is known for its lush greenery, dramatic waterfalls, native wildlife, and deep cultural significance, with strong ties to the Bundjalung people, the Traditional Custodians of the land.
For couples, it’s the perfect blend of adventure and serenity. You can hike through cool forest canopies, discover secluded swimming holes, and enjoy a picnic with no one else in sight. It’s also wonderfully photogenic — so bring your camera or simply take in the view side by side.

Top Things for Couples to Do in Nightcap National Park
Minyon Falls is one of the park’s most iconic sights — a 100-metre waterfall plunging into a deep palm-shaded gorge. The lookout offers panoramic views and is easily accessible by car.
For adventurous couples, take the Minyon Loop Walk, a 7.5km return trail that winds down to the base of the falls. You’ll pass through towering brush box trees and ancient palms, and you can even cool off in the rock pools below. It’s a peaceful, rewarding walk — and ideal for spending uninterrupted time together.
Protesters Falls
A short, easy walk leads to this stunning, misty waterfall deep in the rainforest. The track is just 1.5km return and is perfect for couples who want a quieter, less strenuous experience. The lush surroundings and gentle sound of the falls make it a very romantic spot.
Note: Swimming is not permitted at Protesters Falls to protect the endangered Fleay’s barred frog.
Picnics in the Byron Bay Hinterland Rainforest
Pack a hamper and enjoy a quiet picnic among ancient trees at Rummery Park or Minyon Grass. With fresh air, birdsong, and incredible views, these spots offer a tranquil way to reconnect — just the two of you.
Spot local wildlife
Look out for the native flora and fauna. It’s not unusual to spot a Koala in the tall eucalyptus trees, but as they sleep for up to 22 hours per day you’ll need to be vigilant. Ocassionally you may see Koalas and other wildlife on the side of the road, so please be careful when driving.
Other wildlife to spot are Kookaburras, Parrots, Lyrebireds, Cockatoos and many more rainforest birds. If near creaks or lakes you may spot the elusive platypus along the banks. Spot Pademelons and Rock Wallabies and there’s also rare frogs and other reptiles that may make an appearance.

How to Get There from Tallaringa Romantic Cottages
Nightcap National Park is approximately 45–60 minutes’ drive from Tallaringa, depending on which section of the park you explore.
